The History of the Clarinet

1701 (early 1700?fs); Johann Christoph Denner invented the basic structure of what we know today as a clarinet

1749; Rameau introduced clarinet in Paris

1750; Leblanc was founded by D. Noblet of France.

1751; J.C. Bach introduced clarinet in London

bullet

1762; Louis XV established French Army Band with clarinet

bullet

1791; Mozart Concerto; Written for Anton Stadler in basset horn.  However, the original version of concerto was lost soon after his death.  In 19th century, the music was published, in key of A, but 31 sections in music that goes lower than the lowest note, E, was transposed up.  Even today, people are trying to find the original octave.  This is 4th from the last work of his.

1810; Spohr 2nd concerto

1811; Weber Concertos Op. 73, 74, Concertino op. 26, Variations op. 33, and Quintet op. 34, all written for Heinrich Baermann.  (Actually, this was all written in a span of 4 years.)

1812; Ivan Mueller invented clarinet with thirteen keys.  This invention, however, was turned down by Paris Conservatory

1821; Spohr 3rd concerto

1825; Buffet was opened

1828; Spohr 4th concerto

1832; Boehm System clarinet was introduced.

1843; Boehm-system clarinet, or Klose-Buffet clarinet (17 keys, movable rings, needle spring on wooden body) was manufactured; this is the base of Buffet clarinet as we know today.

1885; Selmer started manufacturing clarinet.

1894; Brahms Sonata Op 120, Trio op. 114, and Quintet Op. 115, all written for Richard Muhlfeld.  They took concert tours together.  These became one of his last works.

1899; Solo de Concours by Andre Messager won the Paris Conservatory competition.

1910; Petite Pieces, Premiere Rhapsody (for Mimart in Paris Conservatory), both by Claude Debussy; Premiere Rhapsody is probably the most famous piece from Paris Conservatory competition along with Messager?fs Solo de Concours.

1919; Stranvinsky?fs Three Pieces.  This song is written for clarinet alone, for Woody Herman.

1921; Sonate for clarinet by Saint-Saens

1929; Carl Nielsen's Concerto for Clarinet.

1947; Aaron Copland?fs clarinet concerto; He was asked to commission by both Woody Herman and Benny Goodman; he chose Benny Goodman for commissioner.

Hindemith Concerto; He was asked by Benny Goodman to commission for concerto; however, because of war involvement with Germany, it became impossible.

1956; Duo Concertant by Darius Milhaud; He was asked to commission for Benny Goodman, however, he turned it down.  Milhaud was more successful on this piece and Sonatine, which was written for Louis Cahuzac.  This piece, Duo Concertant, was written for Ulysse Delecluse.

1974; Malcolm Arnold?fs Concerto No.2 for Benny Goodman.
